Meteorologist

Market-leading ABC affiliate in the sunny Southwest. This could be for a morning show, or it could be for weekends, depending on how the chips fall. The actual position I`ll need to fill hasn`t been determined yet, so I`m accepting applications from candidates of all experience levels.

My sales pitch to you: This is a very strong, progressive station with the best owners you`ll ever work for. While competitors have downsized and cut corners in recent years, this station has enhanced its number one position by spending millions putting a new transmitter in a more desirable location, opening a bureau, expanding our building to double the size of our newsroom, plus adding a new switcher, audio board, top to bottom editing system and ... going on line in the next month, a brand new all-the-bells-and-whistles weather system. This is the only station in the market that employs certified meteorologists at all its weather positions, and we promote our team aggressively. We have a Rolls Royce of a 401k program and a dedicated core of people who`ve chosen to stay here for years and even decades. We routinely win major awards and blahblahblah yaddayaddayadda. Check with your friends in the business and I`m very confident you`ll hear this is a first class place to work. I should also point out that El Paso is a much larger city than you might guess by the market size. It`s actually the 22nd largest city in the country. Our metro population is about 750,000, with the cultural amenities you`d expect to go along with that. We are also adjacent to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, a city of about a million and a half, so there`s a lot going on here. The market rank is #100 because 50% of our signal goes outside the United States, and the outlying communities are pretty spread out. I`d say our news product is pretty comparable to what you`d find in a lot of 50s to 70s markets.

Here`s exactly what I`m looking for: A VHS tape showing your winning personality at work on the air, communicating clearly and having fun. I`m looking for tapes from meteorologists who deliver a forecast that tells the day`s weather story with a minimum of chatter about isobaric strata, thermal convection and orographic uplifting, and a maximum of useful, fast-paced information that can be readily understood by viewers who don`t happen to be atmospheric physicists. Science is good, mind you. It`s okay to mix in a little, as long as you don`t go nuts with it and leave the audience behind. I REALLY like tapes showing solid field lives. I am willing to consider candidates who may not quite be a meteorologist yet, but will be graduating or otherwise receiving certification soon.

Please tell me where you saw this ad. I read all cover letters carefully, so it`s not wasted effort if you feel like knocking yourself out to impress me that you really want to be a part of this team. One possible scenario I am considering would involve about 50% meteorology and 50% general assignments news reporting. Please indicate to me if you would consider that position, or if you would only consider a full-time meteorology position. But don`t be bashful about applying if you`re only interested in a full-time meteorology position ... I truly haven`t made up my mind which direction I`ll need to go.

I`m happy to answer questions. It`s usually easiest to get me via email, but you can drop me a phone call too. I hate to see people waste money on FedEx. Don`t worry about rush delivery. This position probably won`t open until for at least a month or two, maybe not until after May. So there you have it. Thanks for your interest, and good luck!
